Museu Municipal de Peniche
Housed in the Fortress of Peniche, the former political prison of the pre-revolutionary "Estado Novo" (New State), the Peniche Museum has a section dedicated to the anti-fascist resistance movement.
The Visit Room, located close to the reception and the Noble Hall of the Fortress, is a structure attached to the political prison, built in 1967 and used until April 1974.
Presently, the Core 1 of the Anti-fascist Resistance occupies this place, divided in 4 exhibition areas:
Zone 1 – concerns the historical context of the dictatorial period before April 25th 1974 during which this Fortress in Peniche was used as a political prison.
Zone 2 – in this zone it is possible to perceive the aspects of the relationship of the prisoners with the outside world under several ways, pointing out functional regulations of this area of communication in the service of repression, information control and policing.
Zone 3 – the opening of this space to the public aims to make a sensorial contact possible with the isolation and acoustic characteristics created inside the Visit Room.
Zone 4 – Peniche: Memories from the Revolution – the relationship of Peniche with the revolutionary moment and the involvement of the population in the first steps of Democracy, evoked in several documents, are pointed out.
