Centre National d'Études de la Résistance et de la Déportation Edmond Michelet

The Centre National d'Études de la Résistance et de la Déportation Edmond Michelet (Edmond Michelet Centre for National Studies on Resistance and Deportation) in Brive-la-Gaillarde is located within the former home of Michelet, a member of the French Resistance during the Second World War. With the German occupation of France in 1940, Michelet became involved in resistance efforts: under the name "Duval", he organized a group within the Combat movement, and in 1942 served as regional leader of the Movements Unis de la Résistance. On February 25, 1943 Michelet was arrested on suspicion of resistance activities and deported to Dachau Concentration Camp, where he remained until the camp's liberation in April 1945. Elected as a deputy to the postwar Constituent Assembly, Michelet held various positions over the following decades including Minister for the Army from 1945 to 1946, leader of the French Delegation to the United Nations in 1954, and Minister for Justice from 1959 to 1961. He died in Brive-la-Gaillarde on October 9, 1970.

Inaugurated in 1976, the museum serves as a centre for research and study of Michelet's activities as well as broader wartime resistance and deportation in the Corrèze region. Permanent exhibitions include documents, objects, and artwork produced from 1939 to 1945 which offer an understanding of civilian life under occupation, the Vichy Regime, armed resistance, and captivity and deportation. The museum is notable for its collection of over 400 propaganda posters created by French, German, Vichy, and Allied authorities during the war.
