Musée de la Résistance, de la Déportation et de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale
The Musée de la Résistance, de la Déportation et de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale (Museum of Resistance, Deportation, and the Second World War) in Frugières-le-Pin presents and commemorates the history of resistance and deportation in the community and the surrounding Auvergne region during the Second World War, from 1940 to 1944. Located within the territory of Vichy France following the 1940 armistice, then occupied by German forces in 1942, the wartime history of resistance and deportation in Auvergne is presented through the physical artifacts of occupation: official documents and records, photographs, remains of parachute drops and sabotage equipment, weapons and uniforms from soldiers of numerous belligerent nations, larger guns and military vehicles, and a collection of over 300 propaganda posters.
The museum describes itself as a private initiative founded by local Resistance veterans’ and historical groups, and assembled from private donations. In addition to its permanent exhibition space, the site possesses an archive of written records, documents, and letters. Material relating to deportation and internment and concentration camps within and outside France includes letters written from internees at Auschwitz as well as documentation on the operation of the Auvergne internment Camp Riom-ès-Montagnes.
