Partisan Cemetery of Chiusa di Pesio
The Partisan Cemetery of Chiusa di Pesio commemorates the resting place of both named and anonymous partisans who died in the fight for liberation from German and fascist occupation in the Pesio Valley from 1943 to 1945.
Construction began on the cemetery and memorial in the summer of 1945 drawing on memorial plans designed by local architect Carlo Rulfi. Over the following years the remains of other partisans, some identifies and some unknown, were transferred to Chiusa di Pesio, some from mass graves. In 1992, the cemetery was completed and formally registered as a military cemetary with both the municipality and the General Commission for Honours to the Fallen (Commissariato Generale per le Onoranze ai Caduti). According to the memorial itself, it is the only official partisan cemetery in Italy.
