Museo della Guerra e della Linea Gotica
The Museo della Guerra e della Linea Gotica (War and the Gothic Line Museum) in Castel del Rio displays local military and civilian experiences during the First and Second World Wars and in particular presents the history of the Gothic Line: the German line of fortifications established along the northern Apennine Mountains to oppose the Allied advance in 1944-45. The museum displays an inventory of over 2000 physical artifacts including weapons, uniforms, equipment, pieces of fortification, military vehicles, and written and photographic documentation. These are grouped into three thematic exhibits: “The Great War,” “The Second World War,” and “Partisans and Deportation in Castel del Rio.” Yearly on the third Sunday in May the museum organizes the Militaria initiative, an outdoor exhibition of military artifacts and vehicles.
The museum is located in the Palazzo Alidosi, a 16th century palace which houses the Municipality of Castel del Rio, the municipal library and archives, and the Museo del Castagno (Chestnut Museum).
