Stanze della Memoria: Istituto Storico della Resistenza Senese

 

The Stanze della Memoria: Istituto Storico della Resistenza Senese (Historical Institute of Sienese Resistance: Hall of Memory) presents the history of antifascism and resistance from the first decades of the 20th century to the Liberation of Siena and the end of the Second World War. Displays include written and photographic documentation as well as physical artifacts of local antifascism, war, resistance, and liberation. This includes documentation of the massacre of 19 Italian partisans of the Brigate Garibaldi in Siena by Italian Social Republic National Guard forces on March 28, 1944.  

The exhibits are located in the former Sienna Barracks (Casermetta), occupied from 1943-45 by Italian Social Republic forces and employed as a centre for detention, interrogation, and torture of antifascist and partisan internees. It was inaugurated on January 27, 2007.
