The Historical Memory Documentary Centre, with headquarters in Salamanca, is a state-owned and state-managed centre under the Sub-directorate of National Archives. Among its duties, are the following:

- To preserve and to develop the General Archive of the Spanish Civil War.
- To recover, organise, preserve and disseminate the archival holdings and secondary sources on the Civil War, the Franco Dictatorship, the guerrilla resistance to it, exile, the internment of the Spanish people in concentration camps during the Second World War and the Spanish transition to democracy.
- To promote historical research on the abovementioned subjects, and to contribute to its dissemination
- To facilitate the active participation of users and their representative organisations
- To advise and co-operate in locating information to recover the memory and to help victims of the repression
- To promote co-operation with organisations
