Musée de la Résistance d'Anterrieux
The Musée de la Résistance d'Anterrieux (Museum of Resistance in Anterrieux) was opened in 1999 to record and commemorate the actions of local Resistance and Maquis groups and of the French Forces of the Interior in the region during the Second World War. In particular, the museum describes the events of the Bataille du Réduit de la Truyère (Battle of the Truyère Redoubt) on June 20, 1944 and the actions of the 7ième Compagnie des Maquis d'Auvergne.
This confrontation was provoked by the mobilization of Maquis volunteers in May 1944 at Mont Mouchet. This group was twice attacked by German forces, first on June 2 and later on June 10 and 11; the second attack forced the Maquis to withdraw to positions on and around the Truyère River. These positions were created and occupied by the Maquis unit Revanche, composed largely of former French military personnel.
On June 20, 1944, German forces attacked the Truyère positions. Main advances occured around the towns of Mallet, Saint-Juéry, and Pont-Rouge; German aerial bombing targeted and heavily damaged the towns of Anterrieux, Pradel, and Saint Martial. The order for the Maquis to retreat is given by 18:00, and executed under heavy German fire with the assistance of local residents who act as guides; Maquis members disperse to the surrounding areas. The museum records the deaths of 30 out of 186 members of the 7ième Compagnie des Maquis d'Auvergne, and overall casualties of 110 Maquis, 15 Germans, and 10 civilians. On site is a memorial to those Maquis who died.
