Musée de la Résistance, de l'Internement et de la Déportation
The Musée de la Résistance, de l'Internement et de la Déportation (Museum of Resistance, Internment, and Deportation) in Chamalières records the history of resistance, internment, and deportation in the region and in France from 1939 to 1945 as well as the broader history of the Second World War. The museum describes the period through three key themes: the Rise of Nazism; Resistance, Occupation, and Daily Wartime Life; and Internment, Ghettos, Deportation, and the Nuremberg Trials.
More than 3000 period artifacts and documents are displayed, including newspapers, writings and works of art created by those interned in camps, clothing and uniforms worn by deportees, prisoners, and resistance members, recorded interviews with living witnesses, and 1500 photographs.
The museum hosts an annual drawing contest in collaboration with local schools, in which students depict aspects of resistance, internment, and deportation; the aim is "to raise awareness among the young of this period, and to maintain a link between the youngest generations and history." Select drawings are displayed publicly in the museum.
