Museo Storico della Liberazione di Roma

The Museo Storico della Liberazione di Roma (Museum of the Liberation of Rome) presents the history of the German invasion and occupation of Rome in September 1943 following the Italian-Allied Armistice, the impacts on the city’s population, subsequent resistance, and the Liberation of Rome in June 1944.

The museum is located within the former Cultural Office of the German Embassy in Rome, which following the German occupation became the main office of the German Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and a prison for the Sicherheitspolizei (SIPO) and witnessed the interrogation, detention, and torture of Italian citizens at the hands of occupation authorities. Exhibits display documents and photographs from the occupation of Rome and the operation of the site, and rooms in the building are presented as they functioned during that period. A separate exhibit, “Jews in Rome, 1944-45,” contains oral testimonies from survivors.

The site was officially inaugurated on June 4, 1955.
