Museo della Liberazione di Lucca

The Museo della Liberazione di Lucca (Musuem of the Libeation of Lucca) presents the history of the Second World War in Lucca, resistance to German and fascist occupation, and the Liberation of Lucca: it displays military weapons and equipment, uniforms, written and photographic records, and oral testimonies which record local experiences.

The museum also includes information on the Compito Camp, formerly located in the village of Cole de Compito eleven kilometres outside Lucca. Established as a prisoner-of-war camp by the Italian Army in 1942, it was occupied by German authorities September 1943 and functioned as a concentration camp for criminal and racial internees until June 1944.

The museum is located in the Palazza Guinigi, a 14th century building which houses the Municipality of Lucca; it was inaugurated in 1988.
